Kitchen cabinetry hardware is a design detail that will instantly elevate an everyday space and make a serious visual impact. I once heard it compared to 'jewelry for the home' and that phrase has stuck with me since!
Whether building out a brand new kitchen, partially renovating an existing one or just swapping out your current hardware, taking the time to select & invest in classic heirloom-quality pieces makes all of the difference.
As a general starting point, I like to first decide upon the hardware finish. These days truly anything goes and I find that beauty lies in the mix of materials. But typically, hardware works best when it adds visual contrast to a room so think about your kitchen cabinet color, faucet & appliances as well as lighting. Exactly matching the faucet and appliances isn't necessary as long as the finish complements the overall palette.
Though it is project dependent, I tend to gravitate towards warmer finishes- polished nickel over chrome, oil rubbed bronze over matte black, classic unlacquered brass over satin.
I like rich finishes with depth, character and especially those that will patina over time.
In terms of hardware type, there really are no hard and fast rules for determining knobs vs. pulls. It really is a matter of personal preference and the overall design style. Historically, there was preference for knobs on all doors and pulls on all drawers or pantry doors but now part of the fun is the opportunity to create a completely custom look through hardware.
Knobs can be used for both drawers and cabinet doors and I think they really shine best when substantial and of an interesting architectural shape. Pulls tend to best complement longer drawers and I find they are often the statement making design accessory.
Here is a selection of my current favorite classic cabinetry hardware picks from easily accessible, tried & true resources I have been ordering from recently. Signature Hardware, Rejuvenation, Charleston Hardware Co, Top Knobs, and an Etsy Shop YesterHome UK (where I just purchased pull 6. and it came in two days).
